Notable legislative proposal from MHP: Mental Health Law is coming!

MHP Group Deputy Chairman Erkan Akçay stated that recent events are an indication that problems related to mental health are becoming widespread, noting: "Community screenings conducted in many countries show that mental illnesses are more common than previously thought. Today, 1 in every 4 people is affected by some form of mental illness at some point in their lives. The number of those in need of mental health support is increasing due to the hardships, stress, anxiety, and trauma brought on by daily life."

'IT BECOMES CHRONIC AND LASTS A LIFETIME'

Pointing out that, unlike many physical illnesses, mental illnesses emerge at a young age and most become chronic, lasting a lifetime, Akçay spoke as follows:

"When left untreated, mental illnesses lead to serious loss of ability and labor force, as well as familial and social problems. The direct and indirect costs of these diseases are also quite high. I believe that the news of violence against children and women that has been reflected in the public eye, especially in recent weeks, should also be evaluated within this framework. All developed countries and many developing countries have a mental health law. Unfortunately, our country has not had a mental health law to date. We believe there is a need for a mental health law."

AIMING FOR DISCUSSION AS SOON AS POSSIBLE

Reminding that the MHP submitted its proposal regarding mental health to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) during the 26th and 27th legislative terms, Akçay said they want this proposal to be discussed as soon as possible.
