Numan Kurtulmuş comments on the first 4 articles of the constitution: 'A waste of time'

Kurtulmuş stated that negotiations for a new constitution could begin in October 2025.

Emphasizing that a large majority in Parliament has no demand for changes to the first 4 articles, Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş said, "I believe that debating the first 4 articles is a waste of time."

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş answered questions about the agenda during a program he attended on Habertürk.

Speaking about the new constitution efforts and the debate on the first 4 articles, Numan Kurtulmuş said, "If we have a one-year process where we ensure all of Turkey talks, politics talks, and parties prepare their own proposals, I hope that this will begin to be officially discussed in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) in October next year."

Numan Kurtulmuş stated that all parties currently in Parliament have included either a new constitution or a very fundamental constitutional amendment proposal in their election manifestos or party programs.

Stating that, with the exception of the Democrat Party, no party said "we are not part of this, do whatever you want" as a result of the first round, Numan Kurtulmuş said, "Now the first round is over. I hope we will carry out what comes next in a beautiful and transparent manner.

We will extend this beyond just political parties to all segments of society. This process will be carried out under the leadership of the TBMM."

'DEBATING THE FIRST 4 ARTICLES IS A WASTE OF TIME'

Kurtulmuş reported that they met with representatives of the AKP, CHP, MHP, IYI Party, and Saadet Party at an informal dinner, where he asked each party representative, "Do you want the first 4 articles of the constitution to be changed?" and received a "No" answer from all of them.

Underlining that a large majority in Parliament has no demand for changes to the first 4 articles, Numan Kurtulmuş said, "I believe that debating the first 4 articles is a waste of time, that it will open the door to unnecessary debates in Turkey, and that it will poison these constitutional discussions from the very beginning."
