Number of students dropping out of university exceeds the population of 70 countries! More than Malta

According to the Higher Education Quality Council (YÖKAK) Indicator Values Report, more than 728 thousand students in total left their university education in 2021 and 2022. During this period, the number of students who dropped out of their universities exceeded the total population of 50 provinces across Turkey and the population of 70 countries worldwide.

According to a report by Birgün newspaper, 338 thousand 926 students left their university education unfinished in 2021, and 389 thousand 564 in 2022. Another significant point highlighted in the report is that university dropouts are particularly concentrated in large cities. In this context, a tendency for students to leave universities in large cities, especially Istanbul, was observed. The number of students who dropped out of Istanbul University alone has approached 23 thousand in the last two years. Last year, the highest number of university dropouts occurred at Ege University, where the number of students who left was 12 thousand 121.

According to the report, the top 10 universities with the highest number of dropouts in 2022 and the number of students are as follows:

Ege University: 12 thousand 121

Uludağ University: 11 thousand 556

Kocaeli University: 10 thousand 902

Istanbul University: 10 thousand 573

Ankara University: 10 thousand 175

Karabük University: 10 thousand 120

Süleyman Demirel University: 8 thousand 464

Dumlupınar University: 8 thousand 379

Akdeniz University: 7 thousand 870

Dokuz Eylül University: 7 thousand 62

In universities not included in this list, such as Marmara University, Atatürk University, Gazi University, Gaziantep University, Selçuk University, Ankara Hacı Bayram Veli University, Mersin University, and Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University, the number of students dropping out also exceeded 5 thousand, drawing attention.

Furthermore, this number is greater than the population of 70 countries. These countries include Luxembourg, Montenegro, Suriname, Western Sahara, Cape Verde, and Malta.
