On December 4 Miners' Day, miners in Soma rebel by calling it a 'day of mourning'

The problems faced by miners in Turkey continue.

Most recently, while miners in Çayırhan went on strike against privatization, the process was postponed to a later date.

Speaking to ANKA on December 4, International Miners' Day, mine workers in Soma, Manisa, drew attention to imported coal and workplace accidents.

One miner said, "We work 500 meters underground; it is not easy. I hope that no more workplace accidents will occur from now on," while another mine worker stated, "I want all miners to support this struggle against imported coal on Miners' Day."

While there is a total of 600 million tons of coal reserves in Soma, approximately 12 thousand mine workers are employed in Soma.

One miner said, "I think of this as a day experienced in solidarity among our fellow laborers. I want them to receive the value they deserve." Another mine worker described mining as a family profession, saying, "My father worked in this mine for 32 years. I grew up here, and my children are growing up on the same bread."

The miners stated that this day should not only be a celebration but also a day to remember the difficulties of their profession. One worker who said, "Mining is a sacred profession; it is difficult but equally valuable," added, "Every penny we earn is earned honestly."

Furthermore, the workers in Soma emphasized that December 4 Miners' Day should not just be celebrated but should also resonate more strongly with the public.

One worker said, "This day should be our day of mourning. As miners, we are not valued due to energy policies," demanding more support.

The miners view December 4 not only as a day of celebration but also as a day to defend their rights and take steps toward improving their working conditions.
