In Istanbul, armed attacks linked to organized crime groups and allegations of threats against businesses have returned to the agenda. According to a report by Gülnur Saydam from the newspaper Cumhuriyet, following the attacks in Nişantaşı, incidents in Göktürk, located in Eyüpsultan, have caused unease among local residents.
The report states that while investigations and operations continue against organized crime groups known in the public eye by names such as the "Daltons," "Redkits," and "Caspers," the shooting of certain businesses and allegations of extortion have increased fears among citizens of becoming "victims of stray bullets."
In Nişantaşı, three people were injured as a result of an entertainment venue being shot at on May 30, and the same venue was targeted for a second time on June 1. It was reported that a security guard was injured in the second attack and that bullets also struck some surrounding businesses. It was noted that six suspects were detained in connection with the incident and that allegations regarding the crime group known as the "Daltons" were also brought to the fore during the investigation.
SECURITY DEBATE IN GÖKTÜRK
According to the report, following Nişantaşı, allegations of an armed attack on an entertainment venue in Göktürk have heightened security concerns in the area. While it is claimed that attacks were carried out on food and beverage venues by individuals on motorcycles during the night, it was stated that organized crime files include charges such as extortion, shooting at workplaces, armed threats, and robbery.
Police officials who spoke to Cumhuriyet stated that there are no unsolved crime records in Göktürk. The officials argued that there are "no gang elements" in the region and noted that security measures have been increased.
However, some residents and shopkeepers said that daily life has been negatively affected due to extortion demands and allegations of threats. One shopkeeper expressed that anxiety has increased in recent months in the area where they previously walked safely, while another neighborhood resident stated that they are worried about the safety of their children.
