ÖSYM decision to grant 'additional time' for disabled candidates taking the YKS
ÖSYM has decided that the additional time, which was set to begin in 2025 for all disabled students receiving reader or marker assistance who were not previously eligible for extra time in central exams, will be implemented in the YKS on June 8-9.

The Measurement, Selection and Placement Center (ÖSYM) has decided to grant an additional 30 minutes of time to all disabled candidates who receive reader or marker assistance and were not previously eligible for extra time in the Higher Education Institutions Examination (YKS) to be held on June 8-9.
A student with a 76 percent disability due to cerebral palsy had applied to the Ombudsman Institution (KDK) requesting additional time for the YKS they will take this year, stating that they lack fine motor skills in their finger movements and move slower than their peers in situations requiring fine motor skills such as holding a pen, drawing, performing calculations, and writing.
The student, noting that a regulation published by the Council of Higher Education (YÖK) in 2022 decided to grant additional time to disabled students, but that this practice was postponed until the beginning of the 2024-2025 academic year by a regulation in 2024, requested in their application to be granted additional time in the exam they will take this year.
Reviewing the application, the KDK recommended that ÖSYM implement the additional time practice—which is set to be applied in the YKS to be held in the 2024-2025 academic year—in the exam to be held on June 8-9 as well, in order to prevent the applicant student from losing a year.
Following the recommendation, ÖSYM moved up the additional time practice that was set to begin in 2025 and decided to grant an additional 30 minutes to all disabled candidates who receive reader or marker assistance and were not previously eligible for extra time, starting with this year's YKS.
In its decision regarding the matter, ÖSYM stated, "It has been decided to grant an additional 30 minutes to disabled candidates who receive reader or marker assistance and were not previously eligible for extra time in higher education entrance exams, including the 2024-YKS, and the recommendation addressed to our Presidency in your relevant recommendation decision has been implemented."
