Over 100 earthquakes occurred in the last 48 hours: AFAD issued a statement regarding the earthquake swarm in the Aegean Sea

In the Aegean Sea, over 100 tremors ranging from a magnitude of 1.3 to 4.8 were detected between February 1 and 3.

While the seismic activity in the region has caused concern, AFAD has issued a statement.

In a post shared on AFAD's social media account, it was reported that the number of earthquakes in the Aegean Sea, which have intensified since January 28, has exceeded 400.

The statement noted that the largest earthquake recorded so far as a result of this activity, which is developing as an earthquake swarm, was magnitude 4.8.

The statement further conveyed that the earthquakes were concentrated approximately 25 kilometers northeast of Santorini Island, with depths ranging between 5 and 25 kilometers, and that the closest earthquake to the Turkish coast occurred at a distance of 140 kilometers.

The statement recalled that similar intense seismic activity was experienced in the same region in 2011-2012, and that the earthquakes, which lasted for 14 months, did not lead to any volcanic activity.

It was reported that developments are being closely monitored and that scientists and researchers are evaluating the seismic activity, potential volcanic activity, and tsunami risks in coordination with AFAD.

Citizens were warned not to rely on misinformation circulating on social media, and it was stated that official sources should be followed for accurate information.
