The Oxford Dictionary has announced "brain rot" as its word of the year for 2024. More than 37,000 people voted to determine the winner from a shortlist of 6 words prepared by the Oxford Dictionary. The word chosen each year aims to reflect the trends and moods of that year. Last year, the word of the year was "rizz," defined as style, charm, or attractiveness.

WHAT IS BRAIN ROT?

Brain rot is defined as "the supposed deterioration of a person's mental or intellectual state, especially viewed as a result of overconsumption of material (now particularly online content) that is considered trivial or unchallenging."

The words that made the shortlist for word of the year are as follows:

"demure," which emerged following a trend expressing modest or responsible behavior,

"dynamic pricing," where the price of a product or service changes to reflect demand,

"lore," facts and background information about someone or something,

"romantasy," a genre of fiction that combines romance and fantasy,

"slop," low-quality content produced online using artificial intelligence.
