The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an ex officio investigation into social media boycott calls on charges of hate speech and inciting the public to hatred and hostility.

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel reacted to the announcement that an investigation would be opened into boycott-related posts.

Özel shared the following statements on social media:

"What is permissible for Tayyip Erdoğan cannot be forbidden for the nation!

A boycott is a democratic right.

It was Erdoğan himself who initiated a media boycott in 2008.

Those mindless people who vilify the boycott today are the disciples of the chief culprit.

Those who are not ashamed of inconsistency and who hope for help from lies have once again disgraced themselves.

Go ahead..."

Özel also shared archival footage of a speech in which Erdoğan called for a boycott against media groups, primarily Doğan Media.
