While the repercussions of the detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu continue, the CHP decided yesterday (March 21) to hold an extraordinary party congress.

Announcing that the congress will be held on April 6, CHP Chairman Özgür Özel stated that the government has plans to appoint a trustee to the party administration, saying, "If we had not filed an application this week, they would have tried to take our primary election ballot box away from us by appointing a trustee toward the end of the workday today." Özel emphasized that with the decision for the congress, "they have blocked this plan." he emphasized.

MHP Deputy Chairman Feti Yıldız claimed that it would not be possible for CHP leader Özel to make the decision to go to an extraordinary congress.

Yıldız said, "If there are irregularities in the CHP's elections, the new chairman will also be considered not to have been elected in accordance with the procedure, so it is not possible for the chairman to use his authority to take the party to a congress." he said.

In a post on his X account, Yıldız claimed, "that since the conditions for cancellation would be retroactive within the scope of the investigation into the CHP congress, the congress election would also be null and void." he claimed.

Yıldız's post is as follows:

"If the votes of the delegates whose will was corrupted at the CHP congress held on November 4-5, 2024, reached a level that would affect the quorum, and for this reason the general assembly is cancelled or the conditions for appointing a trustee are met; since the cancellation decision will be retroactive, the elections held for all bodies, including the chairman, are null and void. Since this matter will also affect the election of the chairman, meaning the chairman will also be considered not to have been elected in accordance with the procedure, it is not possible for the chairman to use his authority to take the party to a congress."


"CHAIRMANSHIP POWERS CANNOT BE RETROACTIVELY DEEMED NULL AND VOID"

A response to this move by MHP's Feti Yıldız came from the CHP administration. CHP Group Deputy Chairman Murat Emir responded with the following statements: "Election law is limited by strict deadlines and is subject to strict procedural rules. When current laws are applied, it is impossible for our congress to be cancelled, and it is also impossible for the powers of the Chairmanship to be retroactively deemed null and void. The real question that needs to be answered here is whether politicians who give instructions to courthouses can once again murder the law." he responded.
