According to a statement made by the Republican People's Party (CHP), Özgür Özel called FIFA-licensed referee Halil Umut Meler, who was assaulted on the pitch yesterday.

Conveying his get well soon wishes to Meler, Özel stated that the scene that took place on the pitch was a great shame. Expressing that everyone is collectively responsible for failing to prevent this situation, Özel expressed his hope that this grave incident would serve as a turning point and a lesson to be learned from.
Özel noted that his party and all of Turkey stand with Meler.
