CHP Chairman Özgür Özel had criticized TRT's broadcasting policies and the time allocated to his party during the election period, stating that it had given 2,952 minutes to President and AKP Chairman Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, while giving him only 43 minutes.
Özel had also said, "I do not want TRT at my funeral; those who are not present while I am alive should have no interest in my death."

During the call, Özel conveyed his get-well wishes for TRT cameraman Sami Shehadeh and TRT reporter Sami Berhum, who were injured in the attack."
