Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş's '1925' gaffe

Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş and the accompanying state officials visited Anıtkabir for the April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day and the 105th anniversary of the founding of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM). After laying a wreath at Atatürk's mausoleum, Kurtulmuş delivered a speech before signing the Anıtkabir special memorial book.
Kurtulmuş said "1925" for the date 1920, when the Grand National Assembly of Turkey was opened and the Turkish people declared their sovereignty.

Kurtulmuş's speech is as follows:
"April 23, 1925, Commander-in-Chief of our War of Independence, first Speaker of our Grand National Assembly of Turkey, founder of our Republic, Dear Atatürk.
The great National Assembly, which our dear nation opened on April 23, 1920, despite all difficulties, with a great spirit of revival and an ideal of independence, and which entrusted sovereignty to the nation unconditionally, continues its work today on its 105th anniversary with the same determination and resolve.
Our fundamental principle is national sovereignty. Our goal is to increase the prosperity of our nation, deepen our democracy, and strengthen the rule of law.
It is our fundamental duty to protect our national unity without deviating from the goals of the National Pact (Misak-ı Milli).
Always remembering its founding principles and vision, we carry the ideal of making the second century of our Republic a 'Century of Turkey' where its word is strong and its power is influential in every field. As representatives of the nation serving under this supreme roof, we will never compromise on the ideal of independence and the values of the Republic that prioritize the will of the people.
Today, bringing a smile to the faces of all children in our country and the world is a more important responsibility than ever.
April 23 is not only for the children of our country; it is also a holiday and a day of remembrance for all the children of the world who bear the heavy burden of wars, migrations, injustices, crises, and poverty.
We believe that April 23 is also an occasion for our determination to build our future and our search for universal peace.
We will continue to work in national unity and solidarity to build a future worthy of the legacy of the past.
By remaining loyally committed to the national will, we reaffirm our determination to defend democracy, law, and human dignity under all circumstances.
I commemorate with gratitude and appreciation all our deputies, martyrs, and veterans who have upheld national sovereignty since the 1st Assembly, starting with Your Excellency.
