Parliamentary commission established for Kartalkaya hotel fire

The commission established in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) to investigate the hotel fire at the Kartalkaya Ski Center held its first meeting today. AKP MP Selami Altınok, who was elected as the commission chair, stated, 'We will work on what kind of measures need to be taken.'

In the fire that occurred on the morning of January 21 at the Grand Kartal Hotel in the Bolu Kartalkaya Ski Center, 78 people, including 36 children, lost their lives, and 51 people were injured. As part of the investigation into the fire, 30 people were detained and 22 were arrested.

The Parliamentary Research Commission, established to investigate the fire tragedy in all its dimensions, determine responsibilities, and identify the measures that must be taken to prevent similar incidents, held its first meeting today.

AKP MP ELECTED CHAIR

At the meeting, AKP Erzurum MP Selami Altınok was elected as the commission chair, while AKP Gaziantep MP Derya Bakbak served as deputy chair, MHP Elazığ MP Semih Işıkver as spokesperson, and AKP Istanbul MP Nurettin Alan as secretary member.

In his speech after being elected as commission chair, Altınok expressed that the tragedy had deeply saddened the entire country. Stating that they would continue their work with information they will receive from experts and that they may conduct on-site inspections at the Kartalkaya Ski Center, Altınok said:

'We will work on what kind of measures need to be taken regarding fire departments, fire safety, security, accommodation safety, and places where large numbers of people live together, as well as making recommendations if there are legal regulations needed to prevent similar incidents. We must carry out a very humane and conscientious study. I hope all our colleagues will be participatory.'

NEXT MEETING ON FEBRUARY 18

At the meeting, it was decided that the commission would meet again in the following week.

Commission member and AKP Kayseri MP Murat Cahid Cıngı stated in his post-meeting remarks that they would work on technical and legal regulations to ensure the safety of ski center management, hotels in the tourism sector, and travelers.

Stating that the commission would conduct investigations, Cıngı said, "The commission will initiate a process for the preparation of necessary laws and will take steps in the form of recommendations."

The commission will meet again on Tuesday, February 18, at 15:00. At this meeting, the determination of experts to be assigned, the identification of individuals to be invited, and the planning of the work schedule will take place.
