Parliamentary Constitutional and Justice Committee meets for HSK membership

The Joint Committee composed of members of the Turkish Grand National Assembly's (TBMM) Constitutional and Justice Committees has determined 3 candidates for a seat to be filled in the Council of Judges and Prosecutors (HSK) by the General Assembly.

The Joint Committee met under the chairmanship of AKP Tokat Deputy Yusuf Beyazıt for the selection of HSK membership candidates.

CANDIDATES' BACKGROUNDS READ

Stating that one member will be elected to the HSK from the quota of faculty members serving in law departments of higher education institutions, Beyazıt had the backgrounds of applicants Prof. Dr. Çetin Arslan, Prof. Dr. Ender Ethem Atay, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Neslihan Göktürk, Prof. Dr. Bayram Keskin, Prof. Dr. Abdulkerim Yıldırım, and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hamdi Gökçe Zabunoğlu read aloud.

CAN ATALAY REACTION TO HSK ELECTION

Before proceeding to the election, CHP Ankara Deputy Murat Emir and Saadet Party Antalya Deputy Serap Yazıcı Özbudun took the floor to criticize the decision of the Court of Cassation's 3rd Criminal Chamber regarding TİP Deputy Can Atalay, who is a convict in the Gezi Park case.

DEM Party Bingöl Deputy Ömer Faruk Hülakü and DEM Party Van Deputy Zülküf Uçar also stated that they would not participate in the election for the HSK member, citing the "lack of judicial independence in Turkey."

Following the speeches, the meeting continued behind closed doors, where Prof. Dr. Çetin Arslan, Prof. Dr. Bayram Keskin, and Prof. Dr. Ender Ethem Atay were determined as candidates for the HSK membership. The TBMM General Assembly will select one candidate from among the 3 to serve as an HSK member.
