Police block women on International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women: They prevented them from reaching Taksim

Ahead of the march and events planned at Taksim Tunnel as part of the November 25 International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, the Istanbul Governor's Office announced that all marches and events planned in the Beyoğlu district were banned for two days.

In addition, the governor's office imposed restrictions on transportation in line with its decision.

Taksim and its surroundings were closed off with barricades. Despite the bans, citizens gathered on Galip Dede Street.

POLICE MADE ARRESTS

After the citizens gathered there began chanting "We are not leaving the streets or the nights," the police surrounded them and removed members of the press from the area.

After another group arrived on the street chanting slogans, the police detained the group in front of the Galata Tower.

As women gathered in groups on the streets, the police also intervened against a group heading down to Karaköy and surrounded them.

During this time, the women were seen chanting, "We are not leaving the squares."
