Police blockade at CHP: Investigation into events in front of Istanbul Provincial Headquarters

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç announced that a judicial investigation has been launched regarding the events that took place in front of the Republican People's Party (CHP) Istanbul Provincial Headquarters and those who made 'provocative' posts on social media.

The Istanbul 45th Civil Court of First Instance removed CHP Istanbul Provincial Chair Özgür Çelik from office and appointed Gürsel Tekin as a trustee in his place. Following Gürsel Tekin's announcement that he would go to the CHP Istanbul Provincial Headquarters on Monday (September 8), the roads leading to the party building were closed by the police.

Upon a call to gather at the CHP building on the evening of Sunday, September 7, Istanbul Police Riot Squad teams closed the streets leading to the building to traffic.

Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç stated in a post on his social media account that a judicial investigation has been opened by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into those who made provocative posts on social media following the events that occurred in front of the CHP Istanbul Provincial Headquarters building.

Tunç used the following expressions in his post:

"A judicial investigation has been launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office regarding the events that took place in front of the CHP Provincial Headquarters and those who made provocative posts on social media. In the lawsuit filed by a CHP Istanbul Provincial and Convention Delegate due to allegations of irregularities and profiteering at the Istanbul Provincial Congress, and actions alleged to be aimed at influencing the will of the voters, the Istanbul 45th Civil Court of First Instance has appointed a temporary board to the CHP Istanbul Provincial Headquarters, its management and boards as a precautionary measure; the objections made by the CHP Headquarters in the judicial courts and the applications made to the Supreme Election Council against this decision have been rejected. Respecting the decision of the judiciary is a necessity for everyone. The rule of law is the guarantee of the democratic order. For this reason, it is necessary to avoid calls for street protests that will create tension and unrest in society, and for everyone to wait for the outcome of the judicial process with calm. It is of great importance that statements made while the trial process is ongoing are handled with a sense of responsibility. It is the most correct path for all party officials, especially the CHP Chairman, to adopt a tone that observes the peace of our nation and the democratic order."
