In the CHP, which emerged victorious from the March 31 Local Elections, talk has already begun regarding who will be the presidential candidate in the 2028 elections.

CHP Chairman Özgür Özel, in a statement made after the local elections, used the following expressions regarding his party's presidential candidate: “There are currently two strikers on the team. One is Mansur Yavaş, the other is Ekrem İmamoğlu. When the day comes, one of our friends will be the presidential candidate.”

Although Özel pointed to İmamoğlu and Yavaş, his own candidacy is also being mentioned.

According to a report in Gazete Duvar, many deputies within the CHP are keeping their distance from the issue of presidential candidacy. It was learned that these deputies said, “It is not right to discuss today whether İmamoğlu or Yavaş will be the candidate. The future of the CHP, and therefore of Turkey, will be determined by the outcome of the case regarding Ekrem İmamoğlu—for whom a political ban is being sought. We need to see the decision in this case.”
