Prison sentence sought for Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu

Former CHP MP Kadri Enis Berberoğlu, who was tried on allegations of providing footage of the intercepted MİT trucks to former Cumhuriyet newspaper Editor-in-Chief Can Dündar, had been sentenced to 25 years in prison for "disclosing information that must remain confidential due to its nature regarding the security or internal or external political interests of the state, for the purpose of political or military espionage."

In a statement following the prison sentence given to Berberoğlu, the then-CHP Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu had said, "Those who made this decision will be crushed under it. We have spent our years for democracy; we want justice, we want democracy, we want freedom of thought in this country. Those who carried out the July 20 coup destroyed justice and destroyed democracy. A judge has ceased to be a judge; they have their eyes fixed on the palace, waiting for instructions on how to rule. None of them are judges, none of them are dispensing justice; they are only and solely fulfilling the duty of being the palace's stick."

According to a report by the Sabah newspaper, known for its proximity to the government, a lawsuit was filed with an indictment prepared by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, stating that "Kılıçdaroğlu's words exceeded the limits of freedom of expression or criticism, and that there is sufficient evidence that the suspect committed the alleged crime."

A prison sentence of 1 year, 5 months, and 15 days up to 4 years and 1 month, as well as a political ban, were requested for Kılıçdaroğlu for the crime of "Publicly Insulting a Public Official Due to Their Duty in a Chain Manner."
