Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu, the 7th Chairman of the Republican People's Party (CHP), will appear before the judge today (November 22) at the Ankara 57th Criminal Court of First Instance in an insult case filed upon the complaint of AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.
Kılıçdaroğlu faces up to 11 years and 8 months in prison and a political ban due to statements he made about then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan during the December 17-25 process.
Hürriyet columnist Abdulkadir Selvi, known for his proximity to the government, wrote in his column today that Erdoğan had forgiven Kılıçdaroğlu.
Recalling the video Kılıçdaroğlu shared with the call to "Close the ranks," Selvi pointed out that CHP leader Özgür Özel did not make a statement of support for Kılıçdaroğlu.
"ÖZEL WILL RETALIATE AGAINST KILIÇDAROĞLU"
Stating that Kılıçdaroğlu was in Germany when Istanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu received a prison sentence in the 'Fool Case,' Selvi claimed that Özel would also go to Germany to retaliate against Kılıçdaroğlu.
"CHP IS DIVIDED DOWN THE MIDDLE LIKE A WATERMELON"
Stating that Özel and İmamoğlu would not stand by Kılıçdaroğlu and that only Ankara Metropolitan Mayor Mansur Yavaş would provide support, Selvi claimed that in the resulting picture, the CHP is divided "like a watermelon."
"KILIÇDAROĞLU IS STEPPING ON ROTTEN WOOD"
Claiming that Kılıçdaroğlu is preparing for a new breakthrough within the CHP through this trial, Selvi continued:
"He wants to write an epic of heroism. But he is stepping on rotten wood. How so?
Because President Erdoğan has forgiven Kılıçdaroğlu. He is not an intervening party in the case. Just as Kılıçdaroğlu roars, Erdoğan will not want him to receive a political ban or a prison sentence in court. Because Erdoğan has forgiven Kılıçdaroğlu. So, if Erdoğan forgave him, why was this case filed? Because Kılıçdaroğlu has not gone to give a statement until now."
WHAT DID ERDOĞAN'S LAWYER SAY ABOUT THE CASE?
Selvi reported that Erdoğan's lawyer, Hüseyin Aydın, said regarding the case: "I leave it to the appreciation of our nation that Kılıçdaroğlu, who did not provide a defense for seven years and tried to let the cases expire in this way, has gone to provide a defense with a hasty decision, and is trying to create victimization and heroism through criminal files in which our President has waived his complaint and is therefore not a party."
Erdoğan's lawyer stated that although the hearing date was January 14, 2025, the case was moved to November 22 upon Kılıçdaroğlu's petition.
Regarding the moving up of the hearing date, Selvi commented: "Although Kılıçdaroğlu's trial was scheduled for January 14, 2025, he had the date moved up to gain momentum within the CHP."
Stating that Erdoğan waived all cases filed against Kılıçdaroğlu after the July 15, 2016 coup attempt, Selvi said, "President Erdoğan withdrew from these cases, but because Kılıçdaroğlu did not go to give a statement for 7 years, the cases dragged on until today."
