Warning of 'meteorological disaster' from Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen: 'Istanbul could see 43 degrees!'

Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Meteorology Engineering faculty member and CNN Türk Meteorology Consultant Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen made critical assessments regarding the temperatures that began as of June 1. Şen stated, "This heat will not end. It will even intensify further. We will experience a meteorological disaster this year."

Istanbul Technical University (ITU) Meteorology Engineering faculty member and CNN Türk Meteorology Consultant Prof. Dr. Orhan Şen made noteworthy statements.

HOW HIGH WILL THE TEMPERATURE REACH IN ISTANBUL?

Speaking to Hürriyet columnist Fulya Soybaş, Prof. Dr. Şen noted the following:

"Of course, there will be fluctuations in between. Starting from Friday, we spent the weekend a bit more comfortably and saw seasonal norms. Temperatures in the East also decreased by 3-4 degrees. However, starting from Tuesday, it will intensify again in the Marmara, Aegean, western Mediterranean, and Eastern Anatolia regions. The thermometer will hit 40. And unfortunately, there is more to come. July and August will be even hotter than this. The probability of us breaking a record is very high. Last year, the thermometer in Istanbul exceeded the 40.6 degrees recorded in 1938, showing 41.3. This was the hottest day of the last 85 years. It is very likely to see 42-43 this year. Be prepared!"

"THE WINTER WILL BE AS COLD AS THE SUMMER IS HOT"

"In these days when global warming has reached its peak, it is now normal to observe sudden meteorological changes like this," said Prof. Dr. Şen, explaining as follows:

"We experienced this at the beginning of the week as well. The temperature rose by 7-8 degrees, we relaxed a bit over the weekend, but it will intensify again in the regions I listed starting from Tuesday. This is a system. If it continues for 5 days at 5 degrees above the average, it is called a heatwave. We will experience this frequently this year. This is what makes this year different from others. In previous years, we talked about the La Niña-El Niño effect coming from the Pacific, but this time the extreme heat has nothing to do with that. We will also see intense, local precipitation and flooding, as well as hail. Let me tell you this for the first time as well. Just as the summer will be this hot, the winter will be just as cold."
