The arrest of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu continues to spark international reactions. One of these reactions has come from the Italian city of Florence. Dario Nardella, the former Mayor of Florence and current President of Eurocities, a network of European cities, announced that a protest demonstration would be held against İmamoğlu's arrest.
'WE STAND WITH THE TURKISH PEOPLE' MESSAGE
In a statement on his social media account, Dario Nardella announced that they would gather today (Sunday, March 23) at Piazza Santa Maria Novella, one of Florence's prominent squares. Stating that the demonstration is being organized to call for the release of Ekrem İmamoğlu and the protection of democracy in Turkey, Nardella delivered the message, "We must stand with the Turkish people who do not want to lose their freedom and rights."
Nardella further emphasized that as European cities, they must uphold democratic values and the rule of law. Reporting that the protest will continue throughout the day, Nardella invited all democrats to join the solidarity action in Florence.
