While the recent rise in violent incidents in Greece remains a hot topic, Super League team Olympiacos reacted to a VAR decision in their match against AEK yesterday.
In a statement released by the club regarding the match, in which an Olympiacos goal was disallowed following a VAR review, it was stated: "They have stolen 11 of our points in just a few weeks. They have toyed with the fate of the league."
"FOR THE CRIMINAL ORGANIZATION TO BE DISMANTLED..."
The statement further added, "From this moment on, anyone who does not make an effort to ensure the criminal organization is dismantled is aiding this crime, and this is very clear. We have reached the point where words are no longer enough."
The statement, which noted that Greek fans have also witnessed such incidents being reflected on the pitch, called on the government and authorities to intervene in the situation.
Greek Government Spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis, in a briefing held today, reminded that the government has taken a series of measures to prevent violence in sports, stating, "A connection cannot be drawn between the state and a referee's decision. The state cannot intervene in such matters."
WHAT HAPPENED IN THE MATCH?
In the match between Olympiacos and AEK, an Olympiacos goal was disallowed after a VAR review; the decision to invalidate the goal due to a handball by Masouras negatively impacted the team's position in the title race.
Meanwhile, Panathinaikos won their second match under the management of Fatih Terim, rising to the top of the league.
