Özlü, the mayor of a municipality cited as an example for its animal shelters, stated that the bill in question is not practical.
Özlü said, "It is not implementable. You cannot fit millions of animals into shelters. Why should we keep a cute animal that harms no one in a shelter? Does this make any sense?"
The 17-article 'Bill on Amending the Animal Protection Law', which envisions the implementation of "euthanasia" for stray animals under the guise of putting them to sleep, was accepted yesterday in the TBMM Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Affairs Commission.
REACTION FROM WITHIN THE AKP
While reactions to the proposal continue, a reaction has also come from within the AKP.
Faruk Özlü, the AKP mayor of Düzce, whose shelters are cited as an example, made scathing remarks regarding the decision taken by his own party.
Speaking to Ekol Tv, Özlü stated that the law is not implementable. Özlü said, "You cannot fit millions of animals into shelters. Neither the Ministry nor the municipalities have done what is required.
The current law is sufficient for a solution; focus should be placed on implementation.
Only those with the potential to cause harm should be kept in shelters. Why should we keep a cute animal that harms no one in a shelter? Does this make any sense?"
