Reaction to İmamoğlu from AKP's Hüseyin Çelik! He issued a reminder to Erdoğan

Former minister Hüseyin Çelik, one of the founders of the AKP, reacted to the cancellation of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's diploma and his subsequent detention on allegations of 'terrorism' and 'corruption.' In a post on his X account, Çelik stated, "It should not be forgotten that the AK Party came to power by going through similar paths."

İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, whose university diploma was cancelled, was detained in a dawn raid yesterday morning as part of an investigation launched by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into the İBB regarding 'terrorism' and 'corruption' allegations.

While reactions to İmamoğlu's detention have been growing like an avalanche, another reaction came from Hüseyin Çelik, a former Minister of National Education and one of the founders of the AKP.

Emphasizing that the cancellation of İmamoğlu's diploma and his subsequent detention are unacceptable, Çelik stated, "Depriving the public of their right to protest has opened irreparable wounds regarding our already shaky democracy and the principle of the rule of law. Taking extraordinary measures and decisions without declaring a state of emergency is effectively the implementation of martial law. One does not arm-wrestle with the will of the people."

Making a statement via his social media account, Çelik said:

"The cancellation of Ekrem İmamoğlu's diploma and the detention of him and many of his colleagues this morning are unacceptable things. On the other hand, depriving the public of their right to protest regarding what is happening has opened irreparable wounds regarding our already shaky democracy and the principle of the rule of law. Taking extraordinary measures and decisions without declaring a state of emergency is effectively the implementation of martial law. It goes without saying that all kinds of reactions and protests must remain within the bounds of common sense and the law. It should not be forgotten that the AK Party came to power by going through similar paths. What was done to Mr. Erdoğan and the AK Party back then was wrong, and what is being done to Mr. İmamoğlu and the CHP today is also wrong. One does not arm-wrestle with the will of the people. Before anyone else, the government must protect the legal rights of its political opponent so that it can be respected both in the eyes of the public and in the eyes of the whole world. It is clear that all these events are causing great damage to our already fragile economy. It is the low-income citizens, who are already struggling to make ends meet, who are suffering. It is a pity, it is a sin."
