Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Mayor and CHP presidential candidate Ekrem İmamoğlu stated in a message from Silivri Prison, where he is being held, that IMM Deputy Secretary-General Mahir Polat, who is suffering from serious health problems, should be released.

In a post on his social media account, İmamoğlu included the following statements:

"You are still keeping our brother and scholar Mahir Polat, whose health problems are known, whose presence in prison conditions poses a vital risk due to heart disease, and whom we believe with all our hearts to be innocent, in prison. Release Mahir Polat.

Our brilliant young people spent the holiday away from their families, in prison. Release these pure young people so they can go and take their exams. Do not take away anyone's legitimate rights. It is a shame, it is a sin.

Why this savage ambition, this anger and hatred that means anything but justice? Who are you trying to please by continuing these bad practices?

The damage you have caused to the supreme Turkish judiciary has now reached a very advanced level. We expect a statement and reaction from all fair members of the judiciary on behalf of our nation."

SENT TO FORENSIC MEDICINE

IMM Deputy Secretary-General Mahir Polat appeared before a board at Marmara Prison Hospital on Friday, April 4, to evaluate whether his health condition was suitable for remaining in prison conditions.

The board decided to refer Polat to the Council of Forensic Medicine.

Polat's lawyer, Erkam Erdem, announced today that his client has been transferred to the Council of Forensic Medicine.

Mahir Polat, who was taken by ambulance from Marmara Closed Prison to Mehmet Akif Ersoy Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Hospital on March 29 due to health problems, was placed under observation in the Cardiology Intensive Care Unit following examinations and underwent an angiography procedure.

After his treatment process, Polat was discharged on March 31 and sent back to prison.
