Republican People's Party presidential candidate and Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who is currently imprisoned, issued a statement regarding the results of the general elections held in Hungary. As the loss of Viktor Orban, who has been in power for a long time, was watched with curiosity in Turkey during the closely followed elections, İmamoğlu stated, "When citizens refuse to give up their freedom, no oppressive leader is invincible."

Ekrem İmamoğlu, who has been in Silivri Prison since March 23, 2025, shared his message through the "Presidential Candidate Office" social media account.

The most notable development in the Hungarian elections was the defeat of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, who was supported by former US President Donald Trump, against his rival Peter Magyar. Peter Magyar, the leader of the opposition and Chairman of the Respect and Freedom Party (Tisza), won the elections by a significant margin. Orban also announced that he called Magyar on the phone after the defeat to congratulate him.

In his statement, Ekrem İmamoğlu noted the following:

"Hungary chose hope over fear, and democracy over autocracy.

Tonight, the Hungarian people reminded Europe and the world once again: When citizens refuse to give up their freedom, no oppressive leader is invincible.

From a prison cell in Silivri, I send my sincerest congratulations to Hungarian opposition leader Peter Magyar and all the voters who went to the polls to defend the rule of law. This victory belongs to all of us who believe that the ballot box is stronger than fear and that justice, no matter how delayed, will never be defeated.
