Restraining order issued against Berhan Şimşek over domestic violence!

It has emerged that the restraining and protection measures issued against CHP member Berhan Şimşek, following an application by his partner Özlem Şanver alleging physical and psychological violence, have been extended for another two months.

According to a report in Birgün, Özlem Şanver filed a request for protection in April 2026 under Law No. 6284. Evaluating the application, the Istanbul Anatolian 1st Family Court decided to implement a two-month restraining and protection order against Berhan Şimşek.

In an additional ruling dated June 29, the court ordered the measures to continue for another two months. The reasoning for the decision stated that the applicant's statements, the scope of the file, and UYAP records were evaluated.

COURT ISSUES PROTECTION ORDER

In its decision, the court stated that it had reached the conclusion that Şanver “remains at risk of being subjected to violence.” In this context, it was ordered that Şimşek must not engage in any words or behaviors involving threats of violence, insults, or humiliation toward Şanver.

According to the ruling, Şimşek will not be allowed to approach Şanver’s residence, workplace, or school, nor will he be allowed to disturb her via communication devices. Furthermore, if he possesses any authorized weapons, he must surrender them to law enforcement.

The court also warned that if the protection orders are violated, coercive imprisonment may be applied.

The process regarding Şanver’s application for coercive imprisonment, based on the claim that the protection orders were violated, is also ongoing. Upon an appeal against the first-instance court's rejection, the Istanbul Anatolian 2nd Family Court overturned that decision.

The higher court pointed out that the statement transcripts and other evidence submitted to the file by the victim were not sufficiently evaluated and decided to send the file back to the Istanbul Anatolian 1st Family Court for re-examination.

Berhan Şimşek has previously held various positions within the CHP; most recently, he was appointed as a “deputy chairman” by Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu.
