Rojin Kabaiş's father responds to rector allegations: Calls on the Ministry of Justice

Nizamettin Kabaiş, the father of Van Yüzüncü Yıl University student Rojin Kabaiş, has argued that the investigation into his daughter's death is not progressing effectively. In a press statement, Kabaiş demanded that the processes regarding the examination of her mobile phone, campus security cameras, and DNA testing be accelerated.

Stating that his daughter's phone is of critical importance for clarifying the case, Kabaiş recalled the words of former Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu, who had previously said, "Even if the phone were in an acid pit, we would open it." Kabaiş expressed his frustration that the phone has remained locked for two years, noting that no results were obtained even after the device was sent abroad.

DEMAND FOR CAMERA AND DNA EXAMINATION

Nizamettin Kabaiş stated that there was a security booth and a rotating security camera at the location where his daughter disappeared, alleging that the university administration told the family the camera was not working. Claiming that a subsequent letter sent to the Ministry of Justice stated that the cameras at the university were not faulty, Kabaiş asked where the footage was.

Kabaiş alleged that while it was stated that DNA samples from approximately 2,500 people would be examined as part of the investigation, only 400-500 people's DNA has been analyzed so far. Requesting that the work regarding the two male DNA samples in the file be completed, Kabaiş said, "As a family, we are suffering truly great pain. Tell us what happened to our child."

Stating that security cameras belonging to villas and businesses in the Mollakasım region should also be examined, Kabaiş expressed that they have been unable to receive information due to the confidentiality order on the file.

ALLEGATIONS AGAINST UNIVERSITY ADMINISTRATION

Arguing that the Van Yüzüncü Yıl University administration bears responsibility for his daughter's death, Kabaiş said that no action has been taken against the university, the dormitory management, or the rector. Claiming that the family was notified 17 hours later, Kabaiş also made allegations regarding the autopsy process.

Kabaiş alleged that Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Rector Prof. Dr. Hamdullah Şevli was present at the hospital for a long time on the night the autopsy was performed, met with the prosecutor, and entered the autopsy rooms. Requesting that these allegations be investigated, Kabaiş called on the Ministry of Justice to monitor the file.

Kabaiş further alleged that after his daughter's disappearance, the protests organized by students were intervened in, the university administration called law enforcement to the campus, and students were subjected to violence.

SEPARATE ALLEGATIONS AGAINST THE RECTOR ALSO ON THE AGENDA

Kabaiş also requested an investigation into the allegations of sexual assault and threats targeting Van Yüzüncü Yıl University Rector Hamdullah Şevli, which have recently surfaced in the public eye.

Istanbul MP Mustafa Yeneroğlu had submitted a parliamentary question for the Minister of National Education, Yusuf Tekin, to answer regarding the allegations made public by a research assistant. The female research assistant had claimed that after she started her position at the Faculty of Tourism, she was called to the rectorate as part of the Corporate Communications Coordination, was subjected to sexual assault during this process, and was subsequently threatened.

Yeneroğlu stated that these allegations must be "investigated independently and effectively without delay" and called for the necessary administrative measures to be taken for the integrity of the investigation.
