Statement from RTÜK President Şahin on 'IMM investigation'

Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) President Ebubekir Şahin announced that broadcasts regarding the "terrorism and organized crime" investigations into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) are being examined.

In a statement on his social media account, Şahin noted that in light of the developments, they would like to emphasize once again that broadcasting organizations must consider the public interest and social peace while maintaining their editorial independence in their news content.

WARNING ISSUED

Pointing out that taking into account statements from the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and other official sources is a requirement of the principle of the rule of law, Şahin stated, "It is of great importance that news anchors and program commentators do not shape events with their personal political views, in terms of informing the public accurately and not damaging the environment of trust in society."

Reminding of Article 8 of Law No. 6112 on the Establishment and Broadcasting Services of Radio and Television, which states that "Broadcasting services cannot be contrary to the principles of the rule of law, justice, and impartiality," Şahin emphasized that every broadcasting organization is obliged to comply with the rules specified in this law.

Ebubekir Şahin stated the following: "The investigations being carried out are entirely within the framework of the law, and the broadcasts are being continuously examined by our monitoring experts. We remind you that the necessary sanctions will be applied at the maximum level to broadcasting organizations that broadcast in violation of legal regulations, and we thank all media organizations that ensure our public receives accurate and impartial news."
