Rümeysa Öztürk suffered 3 asthma attacks in custody: Her medication is being withheld

U.S. Representative Ayanna Pressley has made striking statements regarding the health condition of Turkish PhD student Rümeysa Öztürk, who was detained due to her support for Palestine. Pressley, who represents the state of Massachusetts in Congress, stated that since Öztürk was taken into custody on March 25, she has been unable to access her asthma medication, leading her to suffer three asthma attacks during her time in detention.
SHE DID NOT RECEIVE HER ASTHMA MEDICATION
In a statement on the platform X (formerly Twitter), Pressley summarized the negligence in custody based on information received from Öztürk's lawyer:
“She has not received her necessary asthma medication. This is a violation of her fundamental right to medical care. This is cruelty, this is negligence, and this is a damn moral and legal failure.”
It was learned that the Turkish student was transferred from Massachusetts, where she was initially detained, to a detention center in Louisiana. It is reported that Öztürk is being deprived of appropriate medical care there, and Pressley has become directly involved in the matter.
DEMANDED HER RELEASE
Addressing the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Pressley demanded that Öztürk be granted immediate access to medical care, that her visa be reinstated, and that she be released.
Tagging prominent Massachusetts senators in her call for support, Pressley issued the following warning to Senator Elizabeth Warren and Senator Ed Markey:
“Every minute she (Öztürk) remains in custody is another minute her health and rights are at risk.”
