Şekeroğlu, who shot himself with a firearm during the protest, was taken to the hospital after the initial intervention by medical teams. The retired police officer, whose condition was reported as critical, could not be saved despite all interventions performed at the hospital.
Before the press statement scheduled for 15:00 at the Ahlatlıbel Atatürk Park, located across from the Constitutional Court (AYM) building in the capital Ankara, a retiree standing in the back of the crowd made a speech drawing attention to the high cost of living and financial struggles. In footage obtained by BirGün, it was recorded that the retiree, wearing a hat with the logo of the Turkey Retired Non-Commissioned Officers Association and holding a sign that read "Not for money, but for our honor," stated that he could not make ends meet and said, "Shame on those who brought us to this state."
As live broadcast crews were preparing to cover the statement, the retired citizen was seen calling out to those around him, saying, "Don't come near, don't come near. I have given up on this," before putting his service pistol to his head and firing. The sound of the gunshot caused great commotion among the crowd and the protesters in the area.
RETIRED POLICE OFFICER AND FATHER OF TWO TAKEN TO GAZI HOSPITAL
According to information obtained from the scene, it was determined that the citizen who participated in the protest to voice demands for a flat-rate raise and attempted suicide with a firearm was a retired police officer and a father of two. The first intervention for the retiree, who shot himself in the head, was performed by 112 Emergency Health teams who arrived at the scene rapidly upon notification. The severely injured citizen was transferred by ambulance to the Gazi Training and Research Hospital (Gazi University Emergency Service) and taken under treatment. Crime Scene Investigation teams have initiated evidence collection and technical examination work in front of the AYM.
POLICE BLOCKADED THE AREA, SCUFFLE ENSUED
Following the gunshot, security forces surrounded the area with iron barricades, creating a tight security blockade. While the area around the citizen who attempted suicide was cordoned off, a short-lived scuffle was recorded between the retirees gathered for the protest and police teams. After security measures were taken, the parties were separated; the retirees waited on one side of the barricades, while the police teams waited on the other. The tense wait in the region continued for a long time.
