Scammed out of 739 thousand TL while trying to buy a car

M.B., who lives in Trabzon, called the phone number in an advertisement to buy a second-hand car being sold from Ankara on a website. Thinking the person he called was the owner of the vehicle, M.B. negotiated and reached an agreement with this person for the sale.

Directing his friend, to whom he had given power of attorney to purchase the vehicle, to a notary in Ankara, M.B. also deposited 739 thousand 600 liras into the bank account number provided to him over the phone.

However, the real owner of the car came to the notary to complete the sale with the proxy buyer, whom he had agreed to meet through phone contact established by the suspect who had called him earlier. Meeting with the person waiting to buy the vehicle with power of attorney, the car owner requested that the money be deposited into his account to initiate the procedures.

FILED A COMPLAINT

The car owner did not carry out the sale, stating that the money had not reached him despite waiting for a while.

Realizing that the person he had spoken to on the phone and deposited the money into the account of was not the owner of the car that went to the notary, M.B. filed a complaint with the Trabzon Police Department.

In their investigation, the police determined that the suspect, who placed a fake advertisement using the information of the vehicle for sale, had contacted both the buyer and the owner separately, and after reaching an agreement with both, ensured they met at the notary.

An investigation has been launched into the suspect.
