İ.Y., the district mufti serving in Seyitgazi district of Eskişehir, is alleged to have sent sexually explicit messages to and harassed N.A., a 12-year-old student at the imam hatip middle school where he taught classes.
After N.A. described what had happened, her family filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office. Following his detention, İ.Y. was brought before the Magistrate's Criminal Court, which released him under judicial supervision.
The Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office appealed the decision regarding İ.Y. An arrest warrant was issued against İ.Y. and he was re-detained.
The following statement was issued by the Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office:
"In connection with allegations that the minor victim N.A., residing in Seyitgazi district of Eskişehir, was subjected to sexual harassment and abuse by suspect İ.Y., our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office immediately initiated investigative proceedings, and suspect İ.Y. was detained within this scope. Suspect İ.Y. was referred by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office to the Duty Magistrate's Criminal Court with a request for his arrest on charges of 'sexual harassment of a child and sexual abuse of a child through molestation' as regulated under Turkish Penal Code No. 5237, but the Duty Magistrate's Criminal Court released him under judicial supervision conditions."
The statement noted that the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office had appealed the judicial supervision decision, adding: "Following the appeal, the Duty Court of First Instance Criminal Court decided to issue an arrest warrant for suspect İ.Y.; the suspect was apprehended pursuant to the arrest warrant on January 11. The investigation is being conducted thoroughly and meticulously in all its aspects."
