Schengen crisis grows: Visa holders asked to report to embassy upon return
The Hungarian Embassy placed a "warning note" inside the passport of a Turkish citizen who received an 8-day Schengen visa to travel to Hungary. The note requests that the individual report to the Consular Section of the Hungarian Embassy in Ankara with their passport upon returning to Turkey to verify that the visa was used for its intended purpose.

The Schengen visa crisis is deepening day by day. As the crisis regarding Schengen visas with European countries continues, another practice that is set to escalate the situation has emerged.
According to a report by Asya Tekyaşar from T24, the Hungarian Embassy accepted the Schengen visa application of a Turkish citizen wishing to travel to Hungary but granted a visa for only 8 days.
The embassy also placed a warning note inside the passport. The note requested that the individual report to the Consular Section of the Hungarian Embassy in Ankara within one week of returning to Turkey.
The warning note stated, "The Consular Section of the Hungarian Embassy in Ankara requests that you bring your passport to our consulate within one week after returning to Turkey from the Schengen Area, in order to verify that the issued visa was used in accordance with the regulations."
The rejection rate for Schengen visa applications from Turkey is increasing every day. It is noted that the rejection rate for Turkish citizens' Schengen visa applications has shown a significant increase over a 4-year period, rising from 9.7 percent in 2019 to 16.1 percent in 2023.
On the other hand, it had been reported that Schengen area countries had closed visa appointments until the end of May, citing the fact that limited quotas had been filled.
VISA FEES HAD BEEN INCREASED
The EU Commission increased Schengen visa renewal fees by 12 percent last week. With the new hike, the visa renewal fee has risen to 90 euros for adults and 45 euros for children aged 6-12. The new tariff will be effective as of June 11.
