A new interim decision has been issued regarding the detained defendants Uğur Mersinli and Peyman Pınar Mersinli in the trial concerning the attack at Ayser Çalık Secondary School in Kahramanmaraş, which resulted in the deaths of 9 students and 1 teacher, and left 17 people injured.
In its interim decision dated October 2, the Kahramanmaraş 3rd High Criminal Court evaluated the detention status of the two defendants separately. Taking into account the nature of the alleged crimes, the current state of evidence, the existence of strong suspicion of guilt, the grounds for detention, and the projected sentence, the court ruled that both defendants should remain in custody.
The interim decision also included an assessment that releasing the defendants under judicial control measures would be insufficient at this stage. The court further ordered that previous interim decisions remain in effect and that necessary procedures be carried out. The decision was reached unanimously.
The families' lawyer, Özcan Kara, recalled that during the hearing held on September 4, it was initially decided that Uğur Mersinli would remain in custody while Peyman Pınar Mersinli would be released. Kara stated that upon their objection to this decision, the Kahramanmaraş 4th High Criminal Court ordered the mother to be re-arrested.
"In this decision, the court emphasized that due to the existence of strong suspicion of guilt, it unanimously decided that both the mother and the father should remain in custody. In this sense, I believe that justice has been served."
