Sea activity turns into tragedy in Mersin! 2 students lose their lives

According to the information received, students who came from Ankara to the Finance Youth Camp affiliated with the Provincial Directorate of Youth and Sports in the Susanoğlu neighborhood of Silifke district entered the sea. Six of the students who crossed the safety line began to struggle. M.E.A. (17) and C.E.K. (16), who were pulled from the sea unconscious with the help of officials and bystanders and transferred to Silifke State Hospital by ambulance, could not be saved and lost their lives. A.B. (17), who was transferred to a private hospital and is in critical condition, was referred to Mersin City Hospital after initial intervention. It was reported that the other 3 students have been discharged.

2 STUDENTS LOST THEIR LIVES

In a statement made by the Mersin Governor's Office, it was stated: "A tragic drowning incident occurred during a sea activity organized at the Finance Youth Camp in Silifke district on June 1, 2025. During the event, which was attended by 75 students from the Ankara Erkunt Vocational Training Center, 6 students faced the danger of drowning after crossing the safety line and going out into the open sea, despite the warnings of the officials. With the intervention of the on-duty lifeguards, 3 students were rescued, while 3 students were caught in the current. As a result of the search and rescue efforts, 2 of the students pulled from the water could not be saved despite all interventions, and the treatment of 1 student continues in the hospital. The other 3 rescued students have been discharged. We wish God's mercy upon our students who lost their lives, offer our condolences to their families, and wish a speedy recovery to our injured student. A judicial and administrative investigation has been launched regarding the incident, and the process is being followed by our Governor's Office."
