A catamaran-type passenger ship traveling from the city of Kyrenia in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to the Port of Taşucu in Mersin capsized off the coast of Kyrenia shortly after setting sail on August 30. It was stated that there were a total of 267 people on board, including the crew.
While 241 people were rescued in the disaster, it was reported that 8 people lost their lives. Search and rescue operations are ongoing to locate the 18 missing passengers.
Following the accident, an investigation was launched into why the ship capsized. TRNC Prime Minister Ünal Üstel announced that the ship's captain and 7 crew members had been detained as part of the investigation.
