It is alleged that Ümit G., an employee at a public bank in Kadıköy, Istanbul, collected nearly 100 million dollars from hundreds of people, including his own relatives, with the promise of high returns.
According to a report in Cumhuriyet, it has been learned that despite 1.5 years passing since the matter was taken to the judiciary, an indictment has not yet been prepared.
"HE WAS MAKING OUR PAYMENTS REGULARLY AT FIRST"
İbrahim Sabur, who claims to have been defrauded of approximately 1 million dollars, said, “We knew him and his family. At first, he was making our payments regularly. We had joined the system only as Ümit's relatives and acquaintances. We were transferring these funds to his account, and he was paying us back as 'debt repayment.' Later, he provided a cash flow among the people involved in this system. In November 2021, he said that the money was in the account but that the bank had frozen the account due to too many transactions. On May 6, 2022, three of us filed a complaint against him. He was taken into custody in August. In his statement, he claimed that we were the ones committing fraud. Then he was released by the duty prosecutor's office. We find it interesting that he was released despite us having many documents.”
"THERE IS NO INFORMATION ABOUT WHERE HE IS RIGHT NOW"
Lawyer Abdullah Bişaroğlu stated, “Despite complaints and the suspect's statement for a year and a half, there had been no progress in the file. Following the incident being reflected in the press, we heard that the file had been sent to an expert witness. There is currently no information about where he is. Furthermore, there is no progress in the file. No indictment has been prepared regarding the matter either.”
