Second trial in Narin Güran murder case begins today: 15 defendants, 6 in custody, face judge

The second trial regarding the death of 8-year-old Narin Güran in Diyarbakır begins today.

Narin Güran's mother, brother, and uncle had previously received aggravated life sentences. Now, the trial of 15 additional defendants on charges of "aiding and abetting a criminal" will commence. Three of the defendants are children.

THE NARİN GÜRAN MURDER

8-year-old Narin Güran went missing in Diyarbakır on August 21. Her lifeless body was found 19 days later in the Eğertutmaz Stream, hidden inside a sack and covered with stones and bushes.

Their neighbor, Nevzat Bahtiyar, confessed to "burying Narin's lifeless body in the stream." As a result of the trial, it was ruled that mother Yüksel, brother Enes, and uncle Salim Güran had committed the murder together.

While these three defendants were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment, Nevzat Bahtiyar was sentenced to 4.5 years in prison for "destroying, concealing, or altering evidence of a crime."

15 DEFENDANTS TRIED ON CHARGES OF "AIDING AND ABETTING A CRIMINAL"

Meanwhile, a second lawsuit was filed against 15 defendants, 6 of whom are in custody, in connection with the murder on the grounds of "aiding and abetting a criminal."

Separate indictments were initially prepared for the defendants, including 3 children, but the files were later merged during the process.

It was determined that the defendants provided false statements during the search efforts. It was also established that they attempted to sabotage the operations by starting a fire in the village.

Investigations also revealed that the gendarmerie personnel serving in the region were followed and that recorded phone calls were deleted, information which was reflected in the case file.

PRISON SENTENCES OF 6 MONTHS TO 5 YEARS REQUESTED

Prison sentences ranging from 6 months to 5 years are being sought for the 15 defendants, including the 3 children.

The trial of the defendants will be held at the Diyarbakır 17th Criminal Court of First Instance.
