As the new reconciliation process, which MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli is the architect of and which the government has named a "Terror-Free Turkey," gets underway, all eyes are now on the commission in the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM).
The commission will hold its first meeting on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş.
Ahead of the critical meeting, a statement regarding 'release' came from former HDP Co-Chair Selahattin Demirtaş.
One of Demirtaş’s lawyers, Mesut Özer, argued that the ongoing process carries significant differences from the resolution process of the past. Özer stated, "This time, MHP leader Devlet Bahçeli and the government are supporting the process. They are aware that the Kurdish issue must now be resolved in a fundamental way."
Lawyer Mesut Özer emphasized that, in parallel with the process, the status of imprisoned individuals should also be re-evaluated. Calling for amnesty for those in prison, Özer said that Selahattin Demirtaş "could be released next month."
ECHR HAD ISSUED A VIOLATION RULING
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) had issued a violation ruling for the third time regarding Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ on July 8. However, despite this ruling, the Ankara 22nd High Criminal Court had rejected the application for release. The detention process for Demirtaş and Yüksekdağ is still ongoing.
