The sentence for 36-year-old Virginia McCullough, who was accused of poisoning her father, John McCullough, with prescription medication put into his alcoholic drink and killing her mother, Lois McCullough, the following day, has been announced.
McCullough was sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 36 years. Her lawyer stated that McCullough first attacked her mother with a hammer and then stabbed her multiple times in the chest with a kitchen knife. It was stated that both murders were committed in June 2019 at the couple's home in Essex. It was revealed that Virginia McCullough continued to live with her parents' corpses for four years following these murders. The murders came to light on September 15, 2023, when police forced entry into the home after their parents' general practitioner became concerned about missed appointments and reported the situation. It was determined that for years, McCullough lied to doctors and relatives about her parents' whereabouts, stalling them with claims that they were sick, on vacation, or on a long trip.
“SHE BUILT A MAKESHIFT TOMB INSIDE THE HOUSE”
Prosecutor Lisa Wilding told Chelmsford Crown Court that McCullough had “built a makeshift tomb” for her father, who worked as a lecturer at Anglia Ruskin University.
“The rectangular tomb was found in a room that was Mr. McCullough's bedroom or study and was made of stacked blocks,” said Wilding, adding that the body was “covered with a large number of blankets and had a series of pictures and paintings on top of it.”
“She hid her mother's body, wrapped in a sleeping bag, inside a wardrobe in her mother's bedroom on the top floor of the property,” Wilding said, noting that McCullough had “been thinking about and planning to kill her parents since March 2019.”
SHE CONFESSED WHILE BEING TAKEN INTO CUSTODY
Bodycam footage of the arrest shows police forcing entry into the home before confronting McCullough in the hallway, where she confessed to her crimes.
Regarding the arrest, McCullough told the officers, “I knew this would eventually happen. It is right that I serve my time. Cheer up, at least you caught the bad guy.”
After her arrest, McCullough described in detail how she killed her family and told police where the murder weapon was, stating that the knife she used to stab her mother was under the stairs, adding, “It will still have blood on it, it's rusted but it will still have traces of blood on it.”
McCullough told the police that she had to “gather her courage” to kill her mother, saying, “Because I knew I had to do it.”
