Sentence deemed insufficient, case returned: Key figure in Narin Güran murder to face judge again
Following the Court of Cassation's decision to re-evaluate the sentence given to Nevzat Bahtiyar in the Narin Güran murder case under a more serious charge, the defendant will appear before the judge again tomorrow. The court will determine whether the classification of the crime will change.

Nevzat Bahtiyar, whose name is mentioned in the incident where Narin Güran lost her life, will appear in court tomorrow after the 1st Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation overturned his prison sentence to have it evaluated under a more serious charge. Bahtiyar will present his defense before the judge again at the Diyarbakır 8th High Criminal Court.
Following the decision for Bahtiyar's retrial, a notice was sent to the prison for his continued detention and for him to be brought to court. The new hearing of the judicial process will take place on April 6.
In his previous testimony, Bahtiyar had confessed to hiding Narin Güran's lifeless body in the Eğertutmaz Stream.
WHAT HAD HAPPENED?
During the process from August 21, 2024, when the impression was given that Narin Güran had gone missing, until her lifeless body was found in the Eğertutmaz Stream on September 8, family members mother Yüksel, brother Enes, and uncle Salim Güran were sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for the crime of "intentional killing of a child in complicity." Nevzat Bahtiyar, on the other hand, was initially sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison on the grounds of "destroying, hiding, or altering evidence of a crime." The Regional Court of Justice had upheld all the verdicts given.
The Chief Public Prosecutor's Office of the Court of Cassation had also applied for the approval of the decisions. However, while the 1st Criminal Chamber of the Court of Cassation upheld the life sentences for the three family members, it overturned the 4-year-and-6-month sentence for Bahtiyar so that his act could be evaluated under the crime of "aiding in qualified intentional killing." Upon this, the case was sent back to the court of first instance to be heard again.
The court explained the justification for the continuation of Bahtiyar's detention with existing concrete evidence, findings that strengthen suspicion, and the legal framework regarding the crime. It also stated that judicial control measures would be insufficient and ruled that his detention was proportionate.
In the Narin Güran case, eyes have turned once again to the new trial in Diyarbakır following this decision by the Court of Cassation.
