In the courtyard of Gazi Primary School in the Saray neighborhood of the Altınordu district, an SUV driven by physical education teacher Banu Kaya struck first-grade student Miray Arslan, who had come to school for orientation week. The young child was taken to Ordu Training and Research Hospital but could not be saved.
Banu Kaya, who was taken into custody and subsequently arrested, appeared in court.
The final hearing of the case, held at the Ordu 5th Criminal Court of First Instance, took place today. While Banu Kaya attended the hearing via SEGBİS, Miray Arslan's mother Eda and father Yakup Arslan, along with the lawyers for both parties, were present in the courtroom.
"THERE IS A MURDER HERE"
While the prosecutor requested Banu Kaya's release, the plaintiff's lawyer demanded that the defendant be tried for "causing death by probable intent."
Banu Kaya stated that the situation was sad and difficult, saying, "I have 2 children and my students. I request my release."
Upon this, the father, Yakup Arslan, reacted to the defendant, saying, "She was laughing as if she were mocking us at the last hearing. There is a murder here. Who is behind them that they can act so comfortably?"
"I REQUEST MY RELEASE"
Banu Kaya reiterated her previous statements, saying, "I did not get anywhere through nepotism. I earned my position honestly. I am sorry. I request my release."
Following the defense statements, the court panel sentenced Banu Kaya to 4 years, 5 months, and 10 days in prison for "causing death by conscious negligence."
