Artist Sertab Erener spoke to journalists in Nişantaşı, Istanbul, regarding the legislative amendment passed by the parliamentary commission with the votes of the AKP and MHP, which provides for the culling of stray animals.

Objecting to the legislative change, Erener made a call to AKP Chairman and President Tayyip Erdoğan, saying, "Give us four years, let us build shelters."

Erener, who is also known for her animal advocacy, addressed Erdoğan as follows:

“Mr. President, I wanted to write a text this morning, record a video, and address you, but journalists appeared before me, and now I want to say this.

We have 4 years ahead of us, and this law covers 4 years. It is impossible for us to gather animals in shelters that do not exist in dozens of provinces and districts across Turkey, in a place that does not exist.

Let us wait for these 4 years, and let us animal lovers do everything we can. You are compassionate, and we are compassionate. Then let us join hands and act as we should.

I request that you give us 4 years so that we can have these shelters built for stray animals and let them live there.”
