She graduated from law school while seeking justice for her disabled son

In Konya, a housewife who graduated at the top of her class from law school after the legal battle for her son, who was left disabled in a traffic accident 10 years ago, now wants to become a judge to serve justice.

Gülistan Sarkurt (39), a mother of three, one of whom has autism, began a legal struggle with her husband to seek justice for her eldest son Canberk (18), who was left disabled in a traffic accident 10 years ago.

Believing that they had suffered losses of rights during the litigation process and feeling that their lawyers were not putting in enough effort, Sarkurt decided to study law.

Sarkurt, who was admitted to Konya Chamber of Commerce Karatay University Faculty of Law, worked with great dedication and graduated from the faculty as the top student.

Sarkurt, who is required to practice law actively for 3 years due to her age, now aims to become a judge by passing the judicial exam.

Sarkurt told an AA reporter that her husband and children were always supportive during her school years and that they reached this point through great family sacrifices.

Stating that they made a great effort to help her autistic son engage with life, Sarkurt expressed that they experienced a great devastation when her eldest son became bedridden after the accident.

'MY GOAL IS TO BE ABLE TO TOUCH THE LIVES OF PEOPLE IN NEED'

Explaining that they went through a major health and legal struggle, Sarkurt said, "When I passed the exam, my youngest son was 2.5 years old. I made sacrifices for the future of my children. My husband and children also made great sacrifices. My husband, alongside his own work, took care of housework, dishes, cleaning, and cooking; he ran after everything. He took on a lot of responsibility, especially during exam periods. We carried out the process with family-wide sacrifice, but the result was beautiful."

Emphasizing that she wants to be a judge because she was deeply affected by the conscientious, compassionate, and fatherly attitudes of the judges who oversaw her son's case, Sarkurt spoke as follows:

"When I saw the judges like that, I thought, 'Why shouldn't I be one too? I can do it too, I am also conscientious.' My goal is to be able to touch the lives of people in need. When you are a doctor, you are instrumental in a person's survival. In law, by touching a person's legal process, you are actually touching their life as well. I want to be a judge to touch people's life processes and be instrumental in them living in a better, more just way, because we have gone through painful and very difficult processes."

'I AM SURE SHE WILL BE A VERY CONSCIENTIOUS AND GOOD JUDGE'

Canberk Sarkurt also expressed that he was both happy and very emotional for his mother, saying, "We supported my mother. We looked after my little brother. My father cooked. We cleaned up the kitchen. My mother finished law school. She will be a good lawyer. I am proud of my mother."

Gökhan Sarkurt (41), stating that his wife often studied from 8:00 AM until 3:00 AM, noted the following:

"She was constantly working to graduate at the top of her class. She could have finished her department in a normal way, but she did her best to become a good lawyer and a good judge for the country. I am sure that my wife will be a very conscientious and good judge. Because of this, I am proud of her."
