She lost her life in the Ankara terror attack: AKP members rejected the proposal to name an overpass after her
In its second session of December, the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) Council rejected a proposal to name an overpass in Büyükçekmece after Ayşegül Pürnek, who was martyred in a heinous terror attack in Ankara on February 17, 2016. The proposal was deemed 'inappropriate' by the Map and Culture-Arts commissions, where AKP council members hold the majority.

REQUESTED BY THE MARTYR'S MOTHER
According to the report by Ali Macit from HalkTV; in a petition submitted on March 24, 2023, Ayşegül Pürnek's mother, Gülay Pürnek, requested that the name of her martyred daughter, Ayşegül, be given to an overpass.
IMM ISSUED A POSITIVE REPORT
In its assessment, the IMM stated, “I submit for your approval the referral to the Municipal Council for evaluation and decision-making regarding the legal process to name the unnamed pedestrian overpass located between Fatih Neighborhood and Dizdariye Neighborhood in Büyükçekmece District as the 'Martyr Ayşegül Pürnek Pedestrian Overpass,' in accordance with Article 18/n of the Municipal Law No. 5393.”
COMMISSION WITH AKP MAJORITY DID NOT FIND IT APPROPRIATE
The Map and Culture-Arts commissions, where AKP council members hold the majority, stated that they did not find this decision appropriate.
The commission report stated, “The proposal has been examined by our commissions, and the request to name the unnamed pedestrian overpass located between Fatih Neighborhood and Dizdariye Neighborhood in Büyükçekmece District as the 'Martyr Ayşegül Pürnek Pedestrian Overpass' has been reviewed; it has not been deemed appropriate by our commissions.”
FEBRUARY 17 ANKARA ATTACK
On February 17, 2016, an explosion occurred in the Çankaya district of Ankara, in an area housing the General Staff, military lodgings, and the Land Forces Command, during the passage of military service vehicles belonging to the Turkish Armed Forces, just 5 minutes away from the Grand National Assembly of Turkey.
As a result of a suicide bomber detonating a vehicle laden with explosives during the passage of 5 military service vehicles, 28 people, including civilians, lost their lives on the day of the incident, and 1 person died while receiving treatment in the hospital, while 61 people were injured.
