Former Ülkü Ocakları President and Hacettepe University faculty member Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sinan Ateş lost his life as a result of an armed attack in Ankara on December 30, 2022.
The 22 defendants involved in the murder case appeared before the court on July 1, 2024, facing charges of "premeditated murder," "attempted murder," "incitement to commit a crime," and "aiding and abetting a crime." In an interim decision issued on Friday, July 5, 2024, the court ordered the release of 10 defendants while rejecting the requests made by the lawyers of the Sinan Ateş family.

The request to merge the case with a separate 17-defendant file, which reportedly involves former MHP MP Olcay Kılavuz and Ülkü Ocakları President Ahmet Yiğit Yıldırım, was also not accepted.
Following the court's decision, some media groups began publishing reports regarding Sinan Ateş. First, it was alleged that the bullet that killed Sinan Ateş was fired from the weapon of his nephew Selman Ateş, who was with him on the day of the murder. However, Sinan Ateş's wife, Ayşe Ateş, refuted this claim by publishing ballistic and autopsy report documents. Akit newspaper, on the other hand, published an article titled "Not an academic, but like a mafia boss," based on messages from the file allegedly belonging to Sinan Ateş.
