The government is working on a comprehensive regulation regarding tobacco products in line with European Union goals. According to the new legislative proposal, smoking will be completely banned in many open areas. Smoking will also be prohibited in the outdoor areas of businesses that provide food and beverage services. It will no longer be possible to smoke in places such as places of worship, educational institutions, hospitals, parks, beaches, and sports areas.
SMOKING WILL BE PERMITTED IN DESIGNATED PRIVATE AREAS
Special areas for smoking may be created, but food and beverage service will not be provided in these sections. Designed with the health of non-smoking citizens in mind, this regulation aims to significantly limit smoking.
NEW REGULATIONS FOR TOBACCO PRODUCTS
With the new regulation, the definition of tobacco products will be expanded, and all products containing nicotine other than cigarettes, such as electronic cigarettes, hookahs, and heated tobacco products, will also be included in the scope. The sale of these products will be tracked via an electronic system, and cash payments will not be accepted.
SALE TO THOSE UNDER 18 WILL BE BANNED
The new regulation will introduce heavy sanctions for the sale of tobacco products to those under 18. A prison sentence of 6 months to 1 year is foreseen for those who sell tobacco products to children. This regulation aims to prevent smoking among young people.
SERIOUS INCREASE IN PENALTIES
Fines ranging from 5 thousand liras to 10 million liras may be imposed on individuals and businesses that do not comply with the ban. In cases of repeated violations, sanctions such as business closure and license revocation will be imposed on businesses. Furthermore, inspections will be carried out by local administrative authorities instead of municipalities.
TOBACCO SALES COMPLETELY BANNED AFTER 2040
One of the most striking articles of the legislative proposal is that the production, sale, and distribution of tobacco products in Turkey will be completely banned as of January 1, 2040.
