APRIL 23 NATIONAL SOVEREIGNTY AND CHILDREN'S DAY
April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day is one of the official holidays and national days of the Republic of Türkiye. It was gifted to children by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder and first president of the Republic of Türkiye. It is also an official holiday and national day in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
This holiday was formed by the spontaneous merger of the April 23 National Holiday, which began to be celebrated on the first anniversary of the opening of the Grand National Assembly of Türkiye (TBMM), and the National Sovereignty Day—which was initially accepted as November 1 following the abolition of the sultanate on November 1, 1922, and later merged with the April 23 National Holiday in 1935—along with the April 23 Children's Day, which was declared by the Society for the Protection of Children (Himaye-i Etfal Cemiyeti) in 1927 and first organized under the auspices of Atatürk.
Most recently, during the 1980 coup period, the National Security Council officially gave this holiday the name "April 23 National Sovereignty and Children's Day."
WHY IS APRIL 23 IMPORTANT FOR CHILDREN?
April 23 is the first children's holiday celebrated in the world. Children from foreign nations also participate in the festivities of this holiday, which Atatürk gifted to Turkish children. Atatürk valued children highly; he would visit schools during his travels, listen to lessons, and ask questions.
Saying, "The children of today are the adults of tomorrow," Atatürk initiated the tradition of leaving administrative roles to students during the holiday.
On April 23, administrative units and elected boards are left to children for a while. This beautiful tradition is repeated every year.
